Hello,
So if the car will catch in gear and run it sounds like one of those components is you most likely issue. I guess you could add the ignition switch as well. I would check at the small wire on the starter to see if it gets power when the key is in the start position. I have changed alot of starters in BMW's of this era. I guess you could try to a jumper wire with a toggle switch it in. Hook one end up to a positive battery connection and the other were the small wire attaches to the starter. Flip the toggle and see if it cranks. If nothing happens when you jump it you need a starter. If you check for power at the small wire when the key is in start and you do have power you need a starter. If it does crank or you don't have power you will have to look at the other items. But I would check there only because of my history with failed starters in these cars. Good Luck, Bernie
