C900 3D Printed Parts 2 Saabers Like This Post! I have begun designing and printing my own parts that are either breaking apart due to age, weathering, or UV damage, or they are wicked expensive brand new from SAAB/ORIO.
One example is part 9473877 for the C900s. I broke 4 out of my 5 when removing them for my resto as they've just about had it after 32 years of degradation. I finally bought a Kobra 2 Pro printer (after hem-hawing around for a year), some UV and heat resistant ASA filament, and designed the part in the online, free-to-use TinkerCad software. I went thru three design iterations before I made one that would work well enough, was strong enough, and was removable a few times to prevent the OE design issue. It basically had to pass my "I'm an angry gorilla with a wrench in my hand when I'm fed up" stress test.
I know it'll sound silly, but setting aside the $300 upfront cost of the printer (as I've printed other stuff other than SAAB stuff), I used about 2 cents of plastic for a ... let me check eSaabparts website real quick... $6.16 piece of plastic THAT I NEED FOUR OF!! Now that's some cost savings!
I also "definitely" didn't go crazy and print off 50 of those, and 100 of another part, and 120 of also another part that would total about $1300 in parts if I bought from ORIO in a single day for fun, spending all of probably 50 cents-ish on plastic filament. I mean I had to dial in the printer somehow ;)
I've also begun designing other random C900 parts and throwing them up on Thingiverse if ya'll need designs to print. I was planning on bringing a bunch of C900 sunroof dog sliders (9292913) with me to the 2024 SOC if anyone needed some, but I won't be able to make it this year due to 3 day drive in either direction from NC and, at the same time, having to attend school again after a career change (becoming an aircraft technician/A&P).
All in all, it's fun to imagine a very exciting world of possibilities with 3D-printed parts, and using them to extend the longevity of our beloved SAABs. The future of many parts will be made at home!
