Last I read this month is that SAAB has not started
engineering on a all new 9-5. They seem to be working
on an updated interior and some restyling.
An all new 9-5 should come around late 2003 early 2004.
However SAAB has finished the development work on the
new 2.3L engine. The new engine will deliver from
170 to 250Hp and will again be a Turbo with the
camshafts being again chain driven. It is based
on the same GM engine used in new Satun 2.2L cars.
It will use the same gearbox as the current 9-5.
The new engine will be a bit lighter and it will
ofer somewhat better milage.
Considering that SAAB also works on the SVC, it is not
impossible that the new engine will be available for
2002 9-5s, but then again they might keep it for
the all new 9-5 in 2004.
The SVC seems to be a first for the next 9-3.
On the other side, OPEL is in the process of
having an engine ready that will offer similar
performance then the SAAB 2.0L Turbo. But as it
has a timing belt, it might be excluded from
use in a SAAB.
I also hear rummors about a twin Turbo V6 which would
be the top engine for the next 9-5. But I could find
nothing to confirm this.
Regards,
Coolknight
