Well, sometimes we buy things just because we "want" them, even though there may be no overpowering reason that we "need" them. Do we "need" cruise control, power windows, locks, keyless entry, power moonroofs, 10 speaker audio systems and 10 disk changers? Do we "need" six second 0 - 60 times, 160mph top speeds, race car like handling? Not really. We like that stuff, or many of us do. So, we buy them.
It's a free country and, if we like like something and we can afford it, then we usually go ahead and buy it. If vehicles like the Audi AllRoad can satisfy folks SUV-like desires rather than a big, honking full-size SUV truck, then why not? Isn't SAAB developing a similar, 4-wheel drive, 9-5 Wagon based vehicle?
I'm not personally interested in such a vehicle. But, you know, sometimes, when pounding over the potholes, ruts, sink-holes, broken concrete and nasty driveways which scrape the airdam and underbody in the areas where I live, I sometimes envy those Subaru Outback folks with that bit of added ground clearance and longer travel suspension.
To each their own.
