This sort of thing is run by dealers authorized service providers in various places at various times. In general, it's a good deal. Just don't be surprised if they give you a list of things that need to be done on your car.
The purpose is to get you into their shop with a good feeling, so the next time you need some work done, you'll think of them. That's just plain good advertising. Also, I've never seen a car that didn't need *some* work, so they can always point out work that needs doing, and with the warm fuzzies they've given you, you'll bring the car to them. Again, there's nothing wrong with this - just capitalism at its best.
Just note - just because they point out something that needs work doesn't mean you need it done. For example, I brought in my folk's 99 (this was a *loooong* time ago) and it was pointed out that it needed both front and rear main seals, for a total of $1,000. Well, yes, the car did drip a little oil, so technically, the seals could be replaced. But the car lost less than half a quart of oil between oil changes, so that repair would have a break even point when the odometer passed 4 million miles. Not bloody likely.
