Here, we have a lot of post-winter dust and grit on the streets. The antenna gets far more abuse this time of year than practically any other time of the year, barring a mid-summer, drought-induced dust storm (of which there could be some this year).
This is a sensitive piece of equipment. I find myself cleaning it more frequently than the car these days. But if you attend to it, like REM says, you can keep it for a long time.
On another antenna matter; we have a low garage due to some home-made storage racks hanging from the ceiling. I have thwapped the antenna more than a couple of times backing in when I neglect to turn off the radio. The antenna bends but I can always make it come back true and fully functional using a yardstick for straightening and a series of very small, light-pressure alignment flexes at strategic points along the mast.
