Hills, Traffic, and Neutral

I live in an area with lots of steep hills and lots of traffic. Recently, I decided to start using Neutral instead of Drive at certain times (we're talking gears here on my automatic transmission 1995 900S with 52K miles). When coasting down a steep hill, sitting still in heavy traffic, or at loooong stoplights, especially in hot hot hot weather, I have tried shifting into Neutral in an effort to safe gas and be easier on the brakes. In theory, this makes sense, right? Hm. Well my question is: does this type of driving/semi-constant shifting (which I adopted only a few days ago and then realized I should get some info first) have any adverse effects on the automatic transmission or any other component of my beloved Saab? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Adrian
