What car do you have? Model, year, engine. What's wrong?
Replacing an alternator in an OG900 is no biggie, as it sits up on top (but the bolts are strangely hard to remove). In a 9000, you need to remove the wheel inner-arch, but that's not biggie - maybe 90 minutes to swap out an alternator if it's DIY, an hour or less for an experienced Saab mechanic. Not sure about the NG900, and I can't talk about the 6 cylinder.
You can buy a new alternator for $400-$600, or you can get lifetime warrantied rebuilt units from most major autoparts chains for about $100.
But a lot depends on what's wrong. It may be as simple as the alternator needing a new set of brushes. That's the problem most of the time. All that requires is to swap out the voltage regulator, which has the brushes built in. The regulator is bolted to the back of the alternator. THat's super easy in the OG900, because the back of the alternator is staring you in the face. There are tricks to do in in the 9000, also.
DOn't assume you need a new alternator. What's the symptoms you're experiencing, what troubleshooting has been done, and most importantly, which car do you have.
