Yep- it's easy... Posted by IrieTom [Email] (#1032) [Profile/Gallery] (more from IrieTom) on Fri, 18 May 2001 11:23:07 In Reply to: Are they easy to install? First- pull the shifter knob off of the shift lever. It's a rubber/plastic knob pressed onto a steel shaft, held in place by friction. Just pull hard, straight up on the knob. It will pop off.
Second- remove the existing rubber bellows boot. Pry the bottom edge off of the metal "lip" on the floor, and then pull the whole boot straight up and over the shift lever. It will turn inside-out like a t-shirt does when you rip it off in a hurry.
Third- slide the new boot over the shift lever upside-down and inside-out, and test fit the base on the metal floor-lip. The top part should be folded over itself for the top inch or two. Put a nice crease in the leather at the point where you want the top to be secured to the sliding plastic reverse lockout ring. Detach the base of the boot from the floor, pull it up far enough to expose the creased portion of the top, and fasten a small zip-tie just below the crease. Fasten the base to the floor again.
Fourth- push the shifter knob back into place.
Fifth- enjoy!
My leather shift boot is OEM and quite worn. Please post your impressions of the quality of the new aftermarket replacement.
