I've owned two Jettas ('87 GL and '86 GLi which I sold with 267,000 miles!!!!!!!) and I would have to concur with the opioions experssed above... unless the Fox is really, really cheap! a friend had a Fox (I beleive '89) which he bought with 45,000 miles and sold a few months later... things went wrong that should not have gone wrong with a 45,000 mile car (radiator failure), and it really did not drive like a European car should. I'm guessing your budget is maybe $2,000-ish, so for that price you can find a good, German build A2 Jetta, with some miles, but one that has been taken very good care of. For that price you can find a similar car that has been completely neglected, so be sure that you find a good one. People who neglect VW's think their cars are worth as much as cars that have been taken care of. Where you are in the country will probably also affect what you can get for your money... try looking on http://www.germanusedcars.com or http://www.excite.com classifieds - lots of good private ads on both these sites... http://www.autotrader.com can have good ads too (I found my 9000 there) though in the lower price ranges you will probably find a lot of cars at dealers for $3,000 that you could find privatley for $1,500....
Five speed VW's are definitely a better bet than automatics
Watch for water leaks through seals (especially back doors, rear footwells)
Listen for excessive whine when in reverse gear ($3-400 to fix)
Usual timing belt replacements...
Body damage not properly repaired usually leads to rust...
You can save quite lot if you buy a car without a/c if you can live without it...
Look out for broken door latches/locks
Good luck!
