Because K-19 was among the first nuclear-powered subs (if not the very first), and because I work with the Russians, I was concerned about the way the Russians would be depicted in this movie, especially on the heels of the Kursk tragedy. If the movie's as good as Red October, then I'll be very happy.
It is an article of faith among Russians that the crew of K-19 heroically, professionally and, most of all, soberly, took it out of a great deal of trouble.
I wrote the K-19 producers and they assured me that this is exactly what this movie will show. They went on to say that Neeson and Ford were especially sentitive to the need for accuracy, given the storm of controversy surrounding the Kursk and the other storm of controversy where a British sub which did heroic service against the Germans was shown by Hollywood to be an American sub - way at odds with the facts.
I don't know about Ford's 900. He was a carpenter at one time so it would come as no surprise to me that he should drive a 900. Another 900 driver was, of course, the sub-jockey who took out the Japanese fishing vessel in Hawaii lately.
I've been to a lot of parties in my life but if you ever get a chance, go to a party hosted by the military on a sub. I did that in Charlottetown in my early 20s and was never treated as well and never had quite as an uniquely a GOOD TIME at any party as that pary on the submarine. (it helped that I had a stunning tall, blond, Amazonian girlfiend at the time.)
The rock 'n roll music carried throughout the sub on the sound system and the liquor was the very best of anything - from Scotch to Vodka - the BEST. It was just great. The dancing was on the deck, with a Japanese lantern lighting system.
Halifax is a tremendous place with exceptional entertainment value for any tourist, especially music on the refurbished waterfront. But I prefer Lunenburg. It's quiet, but for me, as my father grew up there and there are relatives who know about the days of "Wooden Ships and Iron Men", it's a bit of home. It's no surprise to me that Lunenburg is a UNESCO World heritage site.
