Just went through the process of buying a battery for my 94 9000 CSE in which I was replacing the original Saab battery.
First, battery just up and died. No warning. Tested as being weak but still usable.
Second, checked out Consumer Reports and had some great reviews on batteries that uncovered that price has a limited indication of value.
Third, ended up going to Sears and buying a Diehard (on the CR reviews) Silver International Group 47. Of course, the typical Diehards were $69 but the Group 47 (for Mercedes, BMW, etc.) was $100. I felt I had an attack of bait and switch.
Fourth, and most important. Many battery makers catalogs (Sears, Walmart, Exide) shows that this Saab uses a Group 41. It would if it would fit. A Group 41 is about 1/2-1 inches too long/wide! All this only discovered after wasting several hours going back and forth to the stores.
Lesson: Bring in old battery and compare or measure compartment. Saab designed this very specific housing to hold the battery as opposed to say the 85 which has all kinds of room, in fact, requires a hold down strip.
Note, the Group 47 battery came with some plastic gizmo to emit gasses from the battery. I was told that this was only required on a few models of Ford Merkura, Mercedes and others. Not sure if I got the straight story on this fine point.
