Discover Financial Services giving me a hard time. Posted by Scott Paterson [Email] (#13) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Scott Paterson) on Sat, 28 Jul 2001 16:01:15 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I'm sooo pissed at Discover. I got a Discover card the same year I started TSN, in 1988. For a long time, I used it quite frequently, buying into the cashback bonus stuff until I got my Citibank AAdvantage card and now charge everything on that for the frequent flyer miles. I'm one of those anal credit card types. I always pay my balance off every month, with the exception of a couple of 2.X% special limited time rates that I took advantage of, paying off the balance just before the special rate ended. My credit reports are PRISTINE! - with the exception of this one weird $183 mark on my Experian credit report reported from Discover Financial Services. The first time this came up was in 1996 when I bought my home. I called in to Discover and they assured me that I was one of their valued customer and they had nothing bad to report about me ever. The other two credit reporting agencies did not have this mark on my record. This came up again this past month when I started looking into home improvement loans and got what I thought was less than stellar customer service because of the $183 mark on my Experian report. I called Discover again and they insisted it was an Experian mistake. So, I went through the process of instigating and investigation with Experian. Here's the kicker - Experian contacted Discover and Discover confirmed my bad credit of $183 just this month! It's slated to stay on my credit report until the year 2005! I called Discover back and I was pissed. The first woman who answered hung up on me and I called back a second time and asked to speak directly to a supervisor. She wasn't very helpful, confirming facts I already knew - "Sir, you've been a Discover customer since 1988." Duh, really? She asked me to fax in a copy of the investigation report (after I faxed in a copy of the original report earlier this month)...
Here's the problem. I'm a credit card company's worst nightmare. I pay off my balances in full. They don't get jack from me. Would it be better to call Discover and make them cancel my account or would I extract more punishment if I kept my account open, but never charged another thing on the card ever again? I feel the same way about Citibank. They don't give me very good customer service or attention, but I think it's a plot to weed out the balance paying customers in order to keep those that carry their balances and pay the interest fees.
Argh - totally frustrated on a Saturday morning.
