When world war two was over, SAAB was a aircraft manufacturer. Realizing that the demand for their product would drop dramatically in peacetime, they decided to branch out into automobiles.
The two airplanes in production at the time were model #s 90 and 91, so logically, the first SAAB car was called the SAAB 92. The next car was the SAAB 93. The SAAB 94 was known as the "sonett" because somebody proclaimed that the car was "So neat!" (If you don't believe me, check out a swedish/english dictionary) The 95 and 96 models were produced and marketed as the SAAB 95 and SAAB 96, and the Sonett II and Sonett III were the 97 and 98 models, respectively. After the SAAB 99, the next, new, bigger car was named the SAAB 900. An even bigger car, the 9000, was next. I think that 9-5 was picked as an abbreviation of 9 times 10 to the 5th power (90,000 = 9 x 10^5)
I'm sure that any errors I've made will be pointed out and corrected.
