The current type of license plates in Sweden are plastic. Three black letters to the left, three black digits on the right, a space between the letters and digits for a tax decal, a small VIN over the tax decal space, and manufacturing date for the plate in the top right corner. All this on a white reflective background with a slightly raised border. The plate is a sealed unit, not having the quality problems of the older types.
Square plates (used on tractors and US vans :-) have the letters above the digits with the space for the tax decal on the right. A small version is available for motorcycles.
Vanity plates have the space for the tax decal on the right.
Taxi plates have yellow background.
Older plates had a base of black plastic with raised border, letters, and digits. Tha background was finished with a white reflective tape.
The tape is likely to fall off, especially if washed with high pressure water, leaving a completely black license plate. :-)
Even older plates had a base of aluminium/aluminum with raised border, letters, and digits. The raised areas are painted black. The background was finished with a white reflective tape.
