CarTalk runs a survey. Last time I checked in, there were two EU cars in the most frequently repurchased top 6; Porsche (#1) and Saab, in that order. In the middle were a couple of Toyotas and a Honda.
Saab engines run longer. Longer than Toyotas. So the mechanics and practical types know this and keep 'em. Others w/o those skills also notice this but we respect those who can fix 'em (We'd better. 'Else we don't deserve this car.) Also, this car is made of Swedish-spec steel, by an aviation-history manufacturer. Swedish steel has a reputation. Aviation has a reputation.
Saabs are uniquely practical. This, combined with the engine life gives the car 'integrity'. Pile pioneering safety engineering on top of that and for us foul weather types, superb handling capability, and really.....why go anywhere else?
Oh. Did I mention that I, personally, find Saab's design attractive without being way too flash, and that I could give a fiddler's f* what anyone else thinks of it?
The other day, a kid with a brand new Celica rolled up at the light. He was from out-of-province; a place there are few Saabs but lots of road; Saskatchewan. The windows were down. It was hot. He looked over, gave the car the once-over and me a small smile & nod. I nodded back. He had respect written all over his face. These small moments mean a lot.
