Cut the Umbilical Cord! Go West! Posted by EGD [Email] (#663) [Profile/Gallery] (more from EGD) on Tue, 4 Sep 2001 09:17:16 In Reply to: OT: Colleges, Jeff Newton, Mon, 3 Sep 2001 00:36:37 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Basic advice = leave home! I left Masachusetts and received a degree in engineering from Georgia Tech in Atlanta. Moving far away to go to school was the best thing I ever did. Mommy wasn't around to do my laundry and bake cookies, the dog survived without me, etc. Sink or swim.
As for your education in polisci or government, I suggest you get away from the east coast and go west as it seems like most of the "prestige" schools back east are a mutual admiration society. Consider Stanford, UC-Berkeley, or UCLA. Whatever you do, don't spend four years in some parochial college town like Hanover NH (Dartmouth). Make sure there's a big city attached to whatever college you attend. If you're looking for women and good weather, I suggest UC-San Diego or UC-Santa Barbara.
Of course, given your interests, you'll probably have to get a master's degree in something like International Relations to get a job that will pay enough to buy a new Saab in a few years. If so, your bachelor's degree is less important -- you're just laying the foundation for the future. Either way, nothing says you can't change schools or degree programs after a few years. A technical degree of some sort wouldn't hurt you in the future -- how many government-types know anything about technology? -- though it is not a current match to your interest.
Glad I don't have to face this choice anymore -- the PC atmosphere in the colleges today would kill me.
