Americans pride themselves on "opportunity for all" but they are as class-conscious as any Englishman (but in a nouveau-riche sort of way). Walking is low class. Having an SUV is high class, because it tells everyone that WHATEVER IT IS YOU HAVE TO DO is SO IMPORTANT that you MUST get to your destination at all costs. So you spend big $ for a massive vehicle with four-wheel drive so that even in the worst blizzard you can go to the supermarket (about the only place you CAN go, since everything else has the sense to close).
In this case, your PRECIOUS children are SO SPECIAL that walking and thereby exposing them to rapists, crazy dogs, foul air and other nasties is simply out of the question - it would be LOW CLASS. End of rant.
