I got a distress call from a friend this afternoon: "Help, my car died going home from work. Can you come help me..." I got in my Saab and drove to the location he said (a major throughfare at the tail end of rush hour)
The car's battery was dead, so I gave him a jump start. The car started but would not run on its own. Uh-oh. Time to get a tow truck. But where do you find one nearby? Ahhh...the magic button on the dash.
The first lady who answered (Lois? Lisa?) could not have been nicer. I explained that I needed a tow service but it was not my car, but the disabled vehicle was where my car was located, and was not elligible for roadside assistance. I would call and the tow would be paid for separately. She located my car and gave me the name of two tow services near that zip code. I thanked her profusely and hung up thinking that OnStar might not be the crock of $#it that it is made out to be.
Unfortunately, one tow service did not answer and the other did not have any trucks available. No problem, I'll just call OnStar back and get another service to call.
This time, a "gentleman" answered (didn't get his name) and I explained the situatation as before. This joker took about two to three minutes (less time than the first call in total) explaining why he wasn't going to look up a service for me, that it wasn't an emergency and wasn't my car blah, blah blah. ...And these are the people who will recommend a restaurant for you. Yeah, right.
I now know OnStart is indeed a crock. I have made other calls for directions just to test the service with similar (i.e. variable) results.
As for my friend, we were able to get his car to limp for about three blocks, but out of harms way. I recommended he join AAA.
I hope and pray my airbag never goes off.
