I agree with you that this was a very cowardly act. Only cowards hide behind such anonymity. Only cowards are afraid to look their victims in the eye. Only cowards take the lives of innocent people.
I share the grief of the nation and especially the families and loved ones of the victims. My heart goes out to them. Thankfully most of my friends in NY are accounted for. I'd sure like to hear from the others.
I haven't been certified for twelve years but the adrenline rush is still there when I hear a siren. The EMT in me wants to be there to help in some way, but if you stop and think about it for even a moment the enormity of the situation would be so overwhelming. There aren't many victims being pulled out at this point because the fires are still burning, so to some extent it's a dangerous waiting game for the medical people. Go in too soon and you might become a victim yourself; wait too long and it becomes a recovery instead of a rescue. Even the police and firefighters look dazed and somewhat disbelieving of what they are faced with. Somehow when push comes to shove, your training takes over despite what you are feeling inside and you get the job done. But what a job they have ahead of them, and 300 of their comrades are missing and presumed to be in the rubble.
