I didn't speak any Swedish at all when I first came here many years ago, and it was no problem. Nowadays kids learn English from 10 years old, or earlier.

I agree with most of the other posts - Stockholm is beautiful, you mustn't miss it.

I think 3 weeks to see Europe is tight - it may be better to restrict this trip to Scandinavia and central Europe, and save the rest for another time.

If you're staying in hostels, get a list of addresses and phone numbers beforehand (certainly in Sweden you would be advised to phone ahead and book your place (although in England I believe you're not allowed to do that - you just have to take a chance).
The link below is to the Swedish Tourist Association, which runs most of the youth hostels. There's some information in English.
