BMWs and snow...

I think some of this came from early BMWs, without some of the features of the new BMWs, and probably people driving BMWs with their high performance tires in the snow. My next door neighbor said that his former Saab (900? He's never said the model) couldn't get up the hills that surround our house when it snowed. Consequently, he has a bad opinion of Saabs in the snow. However, he never put snow tires on the car and, instead, ran high performance tires on the car.
Any car with low profile, high performance tires will not do well in the snow. I'm going to see if I can make it up the hills in my Viggen, but I've already bought snow tires for the car.
It still makes sense to me that 4wd/awd beats fwd which beats rwd in the snow. Many BMWs have around 50/50 weight distribution, and my Saab has about a 70/30 weight distribution. There's so much more weight over the wheels in a Saab that I think it should perform better in the snow.
My truck is an example of this. In 2wd drive, it goes nowhere in the snow. Even with 200 pounds of sand over the rear axle, it still sucks in the snow. Put it in 4wd, though, and it cuts through the snow like the snow isn't even there. Obviously, some power is still going to the rear wheels, but I really feel the front wheels do the vast majority of the work in the snow.
Let me know if the new 330Ci owner is in CT. I'm really interested to compare a Viggen with snows with a 330Ci with snows.
