New bank card scam, and this one's really cunning. They skim your card *at* the ATM.

You know those ads for wireless video cameras all over the Internet? The truly obnoxious ones that pop up in a new window? Well, some enterprising individual or group has installed these at ATMs and automated POS machines in NYC and sat outside collecting card numbers and PINs. Few customers would think twice about seeing lenses at the ATM or near at Metrocard machine, grocery store ATM, etc.

This is the video version of the old 'scanner and cordless phone' bit.

Apparently, all you need to clone an ATM card is the number on the front and some other prefix information (apparently all the thefts were against Citibank and Chase accounts only). They took the vid clip, cloned the cards, wrote down the PINs and went crazy all over the city. I assume this is only going to get more popular.

They hit us, they cloned my wife's card and got $2800 out within 48 hours. It was maddening because we both had our cards in our hands when we discovered the money gone. Citibank credited it back immediately, but a lot of people here are discovering between $2K and $5K missing.
