Most new SUV's are actually wagons and minivans. Besides the fashion issue, a lot of the SUV classification is done in order to skirt existing legislations on fleet fuel averages. Car fleets are required to make 27.5mpg. That means the 9-5's can't make it without the smaller 9-3's pulling up the average; nor can your turbo 9k cut it without some 900's help pulling the average up. The next generation 9-3 is going to be based on the 9-5 platform; if AWD is to follow on top of that, there won't be enough light-weight SAAB's to hold the line on CAFE standards. SAAB will have to move some 9-5 sales to the "light trucks" ledger thanks to the ridiculous federal CAFE law.
