The heater control knob broke in a similar way. I went to the local Ace Hardware (which has everything and then some) and got a thin brass sleve that just fits over the end of the knob. I tightened it up with vice grips and works fine. You may want to consider a hardier material than tape for a long-term solution - tape will creep when it's hot.
