I haven't taken the time to read all the other posts on here, but here's my 2c...
I fully agree with Jim below (been there, done that). Those refacing jobs are a rip off, and possibly a waste of money, and I consider myself to know something since I work in construction and am a licenced realtor. I got a quote of $7,000 to redo my cabinets by Sears a few years ago, but if I signed there and then I would get it for $5,500, which would only have been $40-odd/month for the rest of my life. How could I refuse? I think they get people with their ads of 'thousands less than custom cabinets'... sure they are thousands less than custom cabinets made of African Mahogany with Italian granite countertop! And the low monthly payment. For what you will pay for an average facelift, you could buy decent quality Home Depot cabinets, and have a whole new kitchen. The insides of your cabinets will be new and nice, and you will be able to list 'new/newer kitchen' if you ever sell the house, not 'tarted up old cabinets'. To be honest, facelifted cabinets is the construction equivalent of a 1985 Honda Civic with a $500 bodykit and a MAACO special paintjob...
What I ended up doing with my cabinets was refurbing them myself by giving them a thorough cleaning, painting inside and staining the outside, new hardware (not hinges, I kept the originals), and new countertop from HD. Total cost was about $300 for material, and almost anybody could do this themselves. Ohyeah, they $5,500 from Sears did not include countertop. There really is one born every minute. I don't know if this is anoption for you, but you can certainly do better with your money than a facelift.
