My theory is that Star Wars movies NEVER have good acting. Ever seen Mark Hamill deliver his first line in Star Wars, in a whining voice -- "But I was going into Toshi station to pick up some power converters!" Terrible acting all the way through.
IMHO, Episode 2 was WAY better than Episode 1. Episode 1 seemed to me to be much more of a movie aimed primarily at little kids, and its plot was completely recycled. I'd rather put up with some sappy romance than 45 minutes of Ja Ja. The only saving grace to Episode 1 was Darth Maul.
I went in with very low expectations after Episode 1. I was actually pleasantly surprised. I think you have to make sure you COMPLETELY suspend your disbelief to enjoy these movies (be prepared to tolerate bad acting, assume that lightsaber maimings are self-cauterizing, etc.). The original STAR WARS blew everyone away because there had NEVER been a movie like it. Hollywood has been producing rip-offs for over twenty years now--its impossible to recapture that original magic.
