I live in NJ. On Tuesday I got hit by a tennis-ball sized rock on the hood which created a 8 inch scrach down to the bear metal. My comprehensive will cover the damage (minus my deductible), without my insurance rates going up. I stopped by the shop today and took pics - I should have numbers tomorrow.
Had I hit another vehicle or an object it would go under collision which would make my premiums rise. The windshield I learnt is in a different category than the body of the car. How this categorization will manifest into payments depends on you particular insurance company's policies.
