that you start off with. "Real" Linux users will go for the stable, but harder to use, distributions like Debian and Slackware. They tout these versions as "true" user's editions. They don't expect a friendly X interface as they usually navigate at CLI level. If you want to migrate to Linux for the fun of it, I'd advise you to choose Mandrake v8.2/8.3 or Redhat 7.3. My preference is Mandrake, as the number of GUI tools is greater, andthey have designed the distribution for real-world converts, not experts. Sure they all have a cetain number of bugs, but these are diminishing. Installer-wise, Mandrake leaves everything in the dust when it comes to new users....bar none. If you have relatively modern hardware, it will pick up all of it and generate an environment which comes close to a Windoze desktop system.
As far as books go, I tend to use the "Bible" series, i.e. the Redhat Linux Bible... and you may already have exposure to these as you come from the Mac and Windows stable. I run Linux at home as well as at work on our NT/Mac OS-X network. My goal is to see (again, for fun) if I can get to do everything I normally do on Mac/Win on Linux... and so far, so good. The best Office tool is Sun's StarOffice 6.0... which you get with the Mandrake v8.x PowerPack edition, or free on coverdisk with Linux Format magazine in the livery of the OpenOffice.org version (which is functionally the same, yet "free" GPL software.
HAVE FUN......It's a great OS when you get used to it. Patience is the key though... there are a few fundamental differences which will get you when you least expect. Don't make the common mistake of "writing it off" as too hard or flakey too early.... it's normally the user, and not the OS that makes the mistakes.
Hope you enjoy it. I do.
