I think the point is that the 9-3 is outdated and can't compete - even with a lowly Opel Astra, let alone the new Open Vectra - both superior cars to the current 9-3 and much cheaper.

IMHO, if Saab had the capacity, GM would've allowed for the development of a new hatch (3 or 5) but, let's face it, with the volumes it needs Saab will be flat out making enough sedans and, within 18 months, convertibles of its hoped-for growing market share.

But, no matter how important the hatch could be, the sedan will have the most chance of biting into the market currently occupied by the 3 Series/C Class/A4/Passat in the US market - the key to world wide success on the scale GM dreams of.
