it's a hormone that stimulates stem-cells in the bone marrow to produce more red blood cells (RBCs). More RBCs --> more oxygen to the muscles
The thing with EPO is that it's effect is long lasting (100+ days) whereas the compound itself is gone from the system within 36 hours. All of the riders have a RBC percentages of around 50% (which is the limit in Tour De France). The normal is 40-45%.....
