Texron, excellent point about the new "big 3" in the eyes of the auto press. Seems to raise the (to me) obvious question: How did Audi pull it off? Look at Audi's most recent model history... There was the 5000, a good car, (one of my personal favorites) but looked at more as an "alternative" to BMWs and MBs of the era. It was quirky (I remember my parents and their friends' comments: 5 cylinders? 4 wheel drive? Turbos? *gasp*) and as you said, not a competitor but "competitive". Audi then had a pretty undistinguished run of modest selling cars through the early 90's (Audi 80, 90, 100, 200) Not bad cars at all, although the Unintended Acceleration and Under Hood Fires bs certainly scared buyers. Suddenly the A4 comes out and overnight Audi is a player! Turbos and AWD on passenger cars is not weird, its cool and almost becoming required! I have A4 driving friends who literally didn't know there were Audis before the A's. Maybe, hopefully, in a way, the new 9-3 will be Saab's A4...
