They want to expand sales. If you try to please the traditional niche market, you lose the broad base. Hence the sans-hatch look. Anybody else notice that there isn't one strong color for the SS either? Ever since Saab dropped Monte Carlo yellow, they seem to be selecting from the same bland palette as everyone else.
I found it amusing the other day that someone mentioned the heresy of Saab moving the window controls to the door panel... This is something that you can tell was done purely to make the car appear more mainstream - and definitely doesn't cost them less. But I personally like it. One of the things that I always thought was kind of chintzy about the current 9-3 is the "reversability" of it. The window controls join everything else (trunk release - see the blank plate on the passenger door, mirror switch - see the blank plate on the passenger mirror...) on the car as being easily used whether the car is LHD or RHD. Moving the window controls to the door costs Saab more, but makes the car appeal to a more sizable audience. If they only appealed to the current 9-3 owner base, Saab's sales would never increase. While I won't buy one (I'll stick with my SE, thanks), I think the new 9-3 will do well among people who were considering a 3-series.
