press releases aren't written by the media, they are written by the company who releases them (i've been known to write one now and then).
written in a journalistic style, they are formal announcements that are forwarded to the media with the hope that they will be picked up and, in turn, either presented as written or reported on. basically the same as a press conference, only on paper (or web).
some press releases merely contain announcements of factual information; others are full-blown public relations spin fests. the media has often been accused of accepting and reporting such propaganda wholesale, without doing its homework first. sometimes, the news you read about/watch on tv has come not from that periodical's/station's own reporting sources, but from someone involved in the story who is working to promote their own position on it or a product/service mentioned in it.
