the contractor's plumber. We are having a hot water recirulation system installed with the new plumbing. The plumber wants to run the recirculation line in the ground, from the back of the home to the front garage, to the water heater. This is about a 50' run. He plans to back fill the two foot trench with about 8" of sand, before filling the rest of the way with the dug out dirt. He states that the sand will heat up, and retain an insulation value around the pipe (warm water recirculation pipe). He also stated that this is better then running it through the new 2X6 stud wall framing, where with insulation he felt I would lose more heat in the wall, then in the dirt.
Does this seem to sound OK to you all? It just seems stange to me that I'd lose more heat running through insulated walls, then in the ground? We are in San Diego, so frozen ground is not a problem. I'm just thinking he is trying to save the labor of drilling and installing the return line though all of the studs, about another extra 50' because of needing to follow the walls.
This group seems to have knowlege over the full spectrum of the universe (except for determing the best oil and filters:)), so I thought someone might be able to tell me to ask more questions - or go to sleep on it!!
Thanks for any input...
