As a Viggen owner moving up to a 9-5 Aero wagon, I understand your desire to be Saab loyal. I definitely am!
I drove a 9-3 convertible for about 30 minutes, and personally, I found the cowl shake to be almost ridiculous. I loved the fact that you didn't get blown to bits at 60 mph, but the constant shaking of the windshield and body on crappy Boston roads was enough to make me say no. Many newer convertibles are much more rigid. I own a 2001 Mazda Miata, which I thought of upgrading, but it feels 10X more rigid, connected, and is a very different kind of car.
The new A4 is supposed to be very stiff, but it is very heavy, and is more of a cruiser than a sports ragtop. Automatic only too (though if you're in CA, and on freeway traffic, then auto is the way to go!). When they bring it in a Quattro version, SIGN ME UP! All seasons vehicle!!
I haven't driven a BMW 3 series ragtop, but they are supposed to be very rigid.
I'd go and test drive several...avoid the Volvo C70...try the BMW, Saab and Audi back to back...
Good luck!
Paul H.
