I think we'll all forget this whole discussion about cheap looking interiors when the model lineup broadens with the Arc and Vector. Basically what it comes down to is this... Saab wants to differentiate the base model from the higher models, and they seem to be doing it even more so that on the outgoing 9-3 which only had a difference of SID, leather/cloth seats, and your choice of wood (as long as it looked like plastic)
Saab also doesn't design cars in a vacuum... They study the competition. BMW, Audi, and Mercedes certainly DO make base model cars absent of wood, leather, or any other upscale-looking accoutrements (you just don't see many of them in this country). Have you looked at Mercedes C230 hatchback? The cloth seats look like something right out of a base model Honda from ten years ago with a really wild cloth pattern that only a hairdresser would love... Ick.
