I wish I'd seen this thread earlier. Yeah, there are a few things that could be done with the OnStar technology that could make it genuinely useful:
1. Implement the full temematics. Saab doesn't do this. There have been a couple of times I have left my car at the airport, hurrying to make a fight and then wondering "did I lock my car?" If this were a domestic GM car, OnStar could take care of this. OnStar also lets you upload ECU codes and download firmware upgrades on domestic GM cars.
2. Make most of the features self-service. One of my biggest beefs is with the varying quality of the call center. If you were able to lock/unlock your car with a touch-tone phone and a PIN, that would be great. If you wanted to use the vehicle locator, you should be able to go to a web page and see for yourself. A true NAV system is many times better than the call center reading directions to you.
3. A keypad for the phone. That voice recognition system was an 85% solution. Plus, you could not use any kind of menuing system (i.e. voicemail) once the call was completed. One poster said that the new 9-3 has this. If so, great.
