Although they lived in my town, I didn't know Kyle or Tim.
From what I've read, though, I think Kyle was a lot like I was when I was his age and in my 20s. I guess that's why their death and the accident leading to it bother me.

When I was 24, I was very lucky in an accident that was entirely my fault. I walked away with cuts and bruises from a head-on collsion between my hot-rodded, 100-mph, autocross-ready VW Beetle (this was 1974) and a Volvo wagon. We were only doing about 35 or 40 and while my car was a goner, seatbelts saved my buddy and me. We were damn lucky. So was the woman in the Volvo, even though she didn't have a belt on. Fortunately she had just dropped off four little kids, or the ending would have been a lot worse.

As car guys, most of us tend to drive hard and some of us even have some advanced driver training under our belts or organized competitive experience. All this makes us better able to handle a car in emergencies, which is important. But sometimes the dragons come to call and there isn't any room for error and a little mistake suddenly gets real serious. You think your skill is going to get you out of a situation but don't always realize thhat some situations are beyond your ability. That situation may never occur. But then again it might.

That accident back in '74 slowed me down (I was REALLY manic back then) then, and while I still am known to have a heavy right foot, I am a LOT more judicious about where and when I put it on the floor. Driving fast is one thing. Doing it so it will get you or someone else hurt or killed is something else altogether.
Thanks. I just had to say this.
