On my previous daily driver (a '94 Saab 9000CS), I changed the brakes at 104K miles, not because they were grinding, but because I figured that they had gone long enough. Probably could have driven another 20K with no problem. I live in suburban NJ, and do a lot of stop and go and secondary road driving. The rotors still had enough meat on them to be cut, and are still going strong at 170K.
My strategy is similar to J's. If I see a red light ahead, I slow down. Most people I see accelerate until the last minute, then jam on the brakes. I drive like a truck driver does... the load is always in motion... I try to never come to a complete halt, but rather press the brakes a bit, slow down, coast for a while, downshift, timing the light to turn green again.
The 9-5's brakes are pretty similar to the 9000's, so I hope to get at least 100K on them as well. Have 69K now, and the pads look like they've lost about 30%. I've never had a warped rotor on any Saab I've owned (8 so far). But my wife's Volvo is a different story.
