..through the Saab Certified Pre-Owned program. I don't see a compelling reason to buy a new car vs. a year old Saab Certified one. In my opinion, the latter is a lot more car for your money. A 6yr/100k warranty is hard to beat.
The 9-5 is the flagship. It's well developed and has a well-refined and reliable powertrain. The 9-3SS is new, and may one day be able to claim this kind of well-tuned legacy, but it can't today.
If you must have the newest, flashiest thing, I guess go with a 9-3SS. But it makes no sense to me to do it. The biggest thing you worry about on a service loaner is how people may have beat it up. To me an additional 50k of warranty coverage (by getting it certified) covers that risk. The dealer will want to tack on $$ to certify it, but hold your ground and let them know you want it certified to cover your "service loaner" risk. Dealers want those leftover '02s off their lot. Speaking ill of the '03 9-3 around here is taken by some as blasphemy, it seems. But I stick by the contention that ANY newly designed car is gonna have its initial growing pains (they're already showing up on the 9-3 board). For that reason, I'd never buy a brand new first year model.
Have you considered an '03 9-5? I hear good deals abound there as well. Personally, I'm a first generation 9-3 man, but given the options you have put out there, I'd go with a 9-5.
One final thing....the bottom line is, which car do you want. Drive both, and see which one your gut says you'll be happier driving everyday. When you spend that kind of money, get something you really like. If you can't make a strong distinction, lean toward the other types of logic I've mentioned here.
Cheers,
'Roo

- Neither. But if I *had* to, I would pick the 9-5 (-), Vlad, Thu, 5 Dec 2002 10:31:30
