I had an 82' DL purchased new. Sold it with 140K miles. It was very reliable. A couple of problem areas that I recall (on mine as it is);
1. I melted the rear tail-light assembly twice. Something about the housing being unable to handle the heat. I still remember the mechanic telling me that it was because it was an automatic (because I always has to apply the brakes).
2. My car was plagued with slow oil leaks. I had a main seal job done as well as a valve cover.
3. The car ate rotors for lunch. What can I say, it was a heavy car.
4. The internal fan (for the heater, etc.) was also a bit of a problem with these cars. Prevailing theory (according to the mechanic) was that because there was no "off" position, the fan would run constantly and the bearings would eventually go.
Severely underpowered but it made up for it in the sense of security you felt behind the wheel. I actually enjoyed that it was rear-wheel drive and I never recall being stuck during the winter (despite living in upstate NY).
These cars definitely conform to the KISS rule (keep it simple, stupid). They were not exceptionally complicated cars, and consequently had fewer pieces to break. I would do it again given the "right" car.
