I would go for the Subaru Legacy wagon. YOu could probably get a later model than either the VW or the 9000 for the same amount of money. It will probably be the most reliable, and when it needs to be fixed, the parts will be cheaper than VW or SAAB. It gives you the space and hatch for hauling things, plus all-wheel drive for snow. And it is a comfortable car to ride in, for your parents.

From what I've read, older VWs are not that reliable, and parts are a bit pricey. The 9000 could be reliable or not, depends on the previous owner, but guaranteed when things have to be replaced, parts and labor is expensive. I have owned 2 9000s, and loved them (still own a '96 9000 CS), but I know from experience they aren't cheap to repair. What you want is a "work" car, and I think the Subaru would fit those needs best.
