First of all, Apple's new products are stunning and as always, easy to use. You mention the need to hook up a digital camera, well having a Mac running OS X and using iPhoto makes it so easy (provided your digital camera has USB or Firewire connectivity). Also you will have iTunes and iMovie which are excellent programs.
Additionally, they have a good deal on Office v. 10 for Macs right now (http://www.apple.com/promo/office/). Many claim that the Mac version is better than the PC one. I use it and have no problems with compatibility between PCs and Macs because it was all made by Microsoft.
Anyway, I highly recommend a Mac. This is coming from someone who used to have a Gateway running Windows 98, and someone who still has to use the latest Windows machines running XP at the highest speeds... there just isn't a comparison... Apple puts together a much better product.
