Even if you dismiss those really old turbo applications like the Corvair Spyder and Olds F-85 (which required a water injection system, of all things), the turbos of the 80's _were_ pretty bad from a driveability and maintenance point of view. Coked up turbo bearings, sludged up crankases and overall underhood deterioration due to the heat was not uncommon - and I would dare say that those first Saab turbos suffered along with everyone else.
The rise in popularity of SUV's, which fall into a separate category for fuel economy and emissions regulatins meant that automakers could now just drop a big ol' normally aspirated engine in and pocket the savings.
The gist of the article, as I saw it, was something that newer Saab owners already know. Namely that modern turbos can be reliable and actually add to the driveability of a vehicle. You just have to remember that we are in a distinct minority compared to the overall marketplace.
