I actually got to drive one of those things a few years ago. The local utility company had one for promotional purposes.
As I recall, the thing did not have a transmission in the conventional sense - just forward and reverse. 1,000 lb/ft of torque sounds about right if you consider a gasoline engine with 200 lb/ft going through a 6:1 or greater reduction in low gear.
When the car came to a stop, there was *nothing*. A strange sensation for sure.
