Being paranoiac instead of broke ( and furious ) ... I imagine you must feel really angry. So I'd be in your place.
My 2 cents : Never trust anyone when facing works done on your car. Never. Always check
what's done.
Once, I've given my 9000 for a little service at my Saab tech. ... but, you know the story :
flushing and changing fluids ( oils and stuffs ) is often a " young mechanic in apprenticeship " type of job. So, it was that time.
The young guy did wrong one or two things in the Saab's procedure ---> to cut the story short:
there wasn't enough oil in the engine. I've immediately noticed that on my way home, the engine
acts differently than usual : it was hotter than normal. Pulled my car on the side. Turned off.
Waited few minutes. Checked the oil level. It was way under the MIN on the dipstick.
Picked up my mobile and told it immediately to my Saab mech. The guy actually yelled thru
his garage asking who was on the job. And fired him right away. Never saw the young fellow
again. And that still embarasses me ... never thought that somebody could loose his job because
( indirectly ) of me. But, my Saab mechanic told me that the guy was wrong on his count of oil liters to put in and on the procedure to do it. And said to me that I was near of a need of a brand new engine. Opened my trunk ( always carry two liters of Mobil 1 10w-40 and Saab's coolant fluid ) and poured almost 1.5 liter of oil to obtain the right level on the dipstick.
Since that story, when I have work done on my 9000, I leave the mechanic shop and , immediately, when out of sight, I stop my car and check everything. I do that so I don't insult the mechanic by doing this in front of him .... but, being at a few hundreds meters of his shop, I am still able to run back to his garage if it needs to.
And, as paranoiac as I am : here's my procedure to step-in the car in the morning : open the door, then open the trunk, check the oil and coolant fluid. Turn the engine for two/three minutes and then leave. Two times a week, when stopping the engine, wait two/three minutes and then, check the oil level.
Check the tranny fluid once a week.
And never go to a company or somebody who's job isn't based exclusively on Saab thinking :
if a Saab mech. can be wrong from times to times ... an independant can be wrong more often on this particular engine.
Maybe that freaky procedure costs me a few minutes per week ... but that can save me from
troubles too.
