I haven't owned a newer Saab, so I don't know how he is with them. I have seen some of the newer cars at his shop. More in recent years. I bought cars from him because I did not have the time to deal with surprises. And the nice thing about it was that I knew the car wouldn't need anything out of the ordinary. Out of 3 cars bought from him (my 2 and my gf's) one needed a cat, one needed an ECU, and one needed an AIC valve. That was after about a years worth of ownership for each car. I would say that was pretty good for 10+ year old Saabs.
Dude, I am 25. Nick serviced my cars when I was in school here, and since I graduated. And you are right, he gets really ticked when some kid begins telling him what he needs to do. Now that I have more time and resources, I work more on them myself. Nick is not cheap, he is thorough. He does not patch problems, he fixes them correctly. If he fixes something and it breaks his reputation is on the line. His personality is strong, but do you want a friend or you want a SAAB mechanic?
Have never taken my car to goodyear or Patterson's. Brakes, suspension, exhaust are pretty easy to do, and I take care of that now. Brakes I have found is where everybody(like for every car) reams you. I agree self sufficiency is the way to go :).
