...sometime in the late 1990's where they compared the standard Crown Vic to a cop Crown Vic cruiser. The main differences were the springs and tons of radios, lights, and electronic equipment. They found that the standard one performed better in handling and acceleration tests (a lot less weight) than the Pig Packer. I think the cop car had a higher top speed.
All that police driver training must pay off (how many times do YOU get to practice 110 mph lane changes?), and there are few highway traffic situations that would allow a car chase to exceed a Cruiser's limits. And the fact they have access to lots of other cops and helicopters and stuff probably mitigates any disadvantages of the beastly handling.
They always catch me, anyway...
Best,
Lutfisk
