In that case it may be worth repairing. I would recommend getting a used or rebuilt tranny instead of rebuilding. There are plenty of used transmissions available from Japan.
Also, how about trying a fluid change and a bottle of Lubegard? Lubegard has cured more than one slipping tranny. Available at NAPA stores. See link below.
And do not use synthetic ATF in there. I had significant problems when I used Mobil 1 ATF in my mom's Impreza. As soon as I switched back to non-synthetic, everything went back to normal.
